That\u2019s a rather pointed question, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

It can also be rather threatening, because, \u201cwhat if you\u2019re not?\u201d Then what?<\/p>\n

After a year of discussing various aspects of the High Points of Leadership Study, this one question, seems to be at the root of many of the issues raised in the survey. People want to know where they stand \u2026 and, if they measure up? They really don\u2019t want the results broadcast to the rest of the world \u2026 but, just having the inner peace of knowing.<\/p>\n

Since \u2018measuring up\u2019 is rather subjective \u2013 it greatly depends on how you define \u201cleader.\u201d Answering the question requires some metrics \u2026 you need to know what to measure.<\/p>\n

Let me help<\/b>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d suggest some \u2018mirror time\u2019 \u2013 self reflection.<\/p>\n

For the last 25 years, I\u2019ve had a poster hanging over my desk that recalls some words written by Whit Hobbs, an old time advertising executive, that I read in an Adweek article, many years ago.<\/p>\n

Look in the mirror. \u201cWhat is success anyway? Have you ever given it any real thought? Maybe you\u2019ve been too busy chasing after it to stop and ask yourself what it is you\u2019re chasing. Or maybe you\u2019ve just gone along with the popular and mistaken notion of the day that it\u2019s something on which you hang a dollar sign. The bigger the dollar sign, the greater the success.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy definition of success hasn\u2019t much to do with money, with power. Success is internal; what\u2019s important isn\u2019t how other people judge you \u2013 what matters is how happy and satisfied you are with yourself. It\u2019s whether or not, way deep inside, you\u2019re satisfied that you\u2019re realizing your full potential \u2013 being the best you think you can be. That\u2019s something about you that the people around you can guess at, but only you know for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSuccess is waking up in the morning, whoever you are, wherever you are, however old or young, and bounding out of bed because there\u2019s something out there that you love to do, that you believe in, that you\u2019re good at \u2013 something that\u2019s bigger than you are and you can hardly wait to get at it again today \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you measure up?<\/b><\/p>\n

When I\u2019m at my best, I\u2019m working most closely to the spirit of Whit Hobbs\u2019 words. There\u2019s no better time of the year to make an honest appraisal of yourself than right now. It\u2019s a new year. Why not start anew?<\/p>\n
